The renaming of the Godfrey Ucar Chitalu Toll Gate to Anderson Ngambela Mazoka is ill-conceived, disrespectful and does not promote national unity, Wright Musona has said.
Mr Musoma, the leader of the Zambia Republican Party says the decision erase the legacy of Zambia’s legendary footballer is divisive that no responsible leadership should have considered.
“It is deeply disappointing that the government has chosen to erase the name of a man who dedicated his life to serving Zambia,” Mr Musomasaid.
“Godfrey Chitalu did not just contribute to sport he was a symbol of national unity and commitment, and he died in active service. That must count for something.”
The government recently announced the renaming of the toll gate in honour of Anderson Kambela Mazoka, a prominent opposition leader and businessman who led the United Party for National Development (UPND) in its early years.
However, Mr Musoma questioned the criteria used in selecting Mr Mazoka for the honour, arguing that his contributions, while notable, were of a different nature.
“We are not disputing Mr. Mazoka’s role in Zambia’s political landscape,” Mr Musoma said. “But we must be clear - he was a politician and a private businessman.
Chitalu, on the other hand, served the nation selflessly and paid the ultimate price while on duty. These are not comparable forms of service.”
Mr Musoma also called on the government to reconsider the decision and engage stakeholders before making such changes to national landmarks.
“National symbols and public infrastructure names should unite, not divide,” he said. “We urge the authorities to reverse this decision and preserve the legacy of those who gave their lives in service to Zambia.”
